Edmodo was a social learning platform designed to connect teachers, students, and parents, facilitating the sharing of content, assignments, and communication. Founded in 2008 by Nic Borg, Jeff O’Hara, and Crystal Hutter, it grew rapidly, with over 87 million users at its peak. The platform offered tools like quizzes, assignments, and progress tracking, and partnered with Oxford and Cambridge University Press for educational content. In 2017, a major data breach affected 77 million users. Acquired by NetDragon in 2018, Edmodo was discontinued on September 22, 2022. In 2023, Edmodo faced legal issues for violating children’s privacy laws, resulting in a $6 million penalty.
